Meet some of our wonderful team! (Without them we’d literally be nothing.)
Terry Smit – Founder & Managing Director
Hi, as the founder & Managing Director of Go West Tours, I’m delighted that you’re looking at this page & learning more about our amazing team. I started in travel as a European Tour Manager in 1997, but my passion for sharing interesting information & good times with people dates back much further. In past lives I have worked as a swimming pool & spa installer, gas consumption analyst & mail sorter, so I’m truly grateful that I managed to find & settle in the travel industry. When not working to continuously improve & grow Go West Tours you might find me on (or nearby) a cricket field, or perhaps enjoying a full-bodied red wine with some friends.
Di Spencer – General Manager
I grew up on a dairy farm in a small country town about 1.5 hours east of Melbourne. After completing my schooling, I headed to Melbourne to live and have been working in tourism since 2009. My passion outside of Go West Tours is travel. When I’m not at work, you can generally find me planning my next holiday. This year I’m heading off to Africa to experience their animals, history and crystal-clear beaches. When I’m not on holidays you can find me spending time with my golden Labrador, Junior or out and about with friends for a meal or movie. I have just been appointed as General Manager after starting my career as a tour guide 9 years ago. My favourite part of the job is helping bring together a great team who deliver fantastic experiences to guests.
Jess – Reservations Manager
I grew up in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and spent a lot of my childhood visiting the Great Ocean Road on family holidays. I love experiencing new cities and countries, eating out, spending time at the beach and playing music. I started out as an intern at Go West in 2015 during my second year of university while studying Tourism, Hospitality and Financial Planning. My role has changed quite a bit since then and I now manage the Reservations department with help from our fantastic Go West family.
Libby – HR Manager & Payroll Officer
I have grown up and currently live in Melbourne’s Northern Suburbs, although l have also spent two years living in the UK and a year in Canada. Travel makes me happy J which is why I chose to utilise youth mobility or working holiday visas as they provided me with wonderful opportunities to work for amazing companies and to have variety of roles in different cities around the world. I have been working for Go West Tours now for a year and I have enjoyed every minute with the wonderful people who work here.
Erica – Accounts Manager
I was born in Melbourne, along with the travel bug. I’ve lived in Germany, America and India, but still call Australia home. Travelling any place I haven’t been is always at the top of my list! Performing Arts is also a life long passion. From Musical Theatre to Ballroom & Bollywood dancing. I’ve been at Go West for many years now as I enjoy the work environment and amazing team I work with. I like staying active and busy, which is also great in this role!
Daniel – Operations Manager
I grew up in a small country town in NSW. My parents were big travelers & they are definitely the reason that I caught the travel bug at such an early age. Travel has been a big part of my life ever since. I started with Go West in 2013 as a Tour Guide & have progressed over time to my current role as Operations Manager. The things I love about my job are: 1 – working with the most awesome team of people at Go West, and; 2 – meeting amazing people from around the world & showing them just how spectacular Australia is.
Scott – Tour Guide & Operations Supervisor
I’ve been working for Go West for about 18 months now! When I’m not working I enjoy travelling. I’ve been to over 40 countries and am looking to increase that number soon. Previously I was working for a company directing tours throughout Europe. At the End of 2016 I was keen to move back home and heard about Go West from a friend who was working in their office. Shortly after I began my training as a guide for Go West. It’s a pretty fantastic thing to be able to show people from all around the world such a great part of Australia. Plus, you work with some pretty great people day in day out.
Dave – Tour Guide & Operations Supervisor
I grew up in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges, right near the iconic Puffing Billy Railway. I started as a casual guide at Go West all the way back in 2010! I am now full time and divide my role between operations and guiding work. I have always loved the freedom that this job provides, being out in an amazing office and enjoying the great outdoors, as well as meeting amazing and interesting people from around the globe and sharing stories with them. I have always been interested in sports and the outdoors, I play some social sport (netball – gladitorial I know) each week, and try and get out an explore on walks and hikes around Melbourne when I can.
Alex – Tour Guide & Operations Supervisor
I grew up in Sydney, Australia. I’ve travelled and lived in many places around the globe but finally settled in beautiful Melbourne two years ago, when I made the switch from being a mechanic to a tour guide for Go West. I haven’t looked back- I love being outdoors, meeting new people from around the world, and showing our guests some amazing Australian sights. I’ve now become part of the operations team, which I also really enjoy. When I’m not at work I am usually planning my next travel adventure, or hiking, cycling, swimming, snowboarding, snorkelling, or diving (pretty much anything outdoors).
Nathan – Domestic Marketing Manager
Raised in a small country town in NSW (Deniliquin), I grew up skiing on the Edward River and playing music. I started with Go West in August 2017 after completing my degree in Business Marketing at La Trobe University. Before this I worked in hospitality for number of years in pubs & bars around town. Also a musician, when I’m not at work you’ll find me behind a drum kit playing gigs around Melbourne and interstate. My favourite part of the job has been working with such a passionate and enthusiastic bunch! It’s also great to be able to see Melbourne through the eyes of a tourist, sometimes it’s easy to forget just how fantastic Melbourne is!
Mel – Reservations
Aside from living in China for 3 years after I was born in Australia, I have called Melbourne home for my entire life. I started with the Go West reservations team in early 2018. When I am not working, I am either road tripping to mother nature, or on the hunt for Melbourne’s best fried chicken. My favourite part of the job is chatting to people from around the world about their passions, past experiences or future life plans. Go West exposes me to a diverse field of interesting personalities, and in return I share with others my delicious chicken wing suggestions.
Ruth – Reservations
I grew up in north Queensland, then at 20 years old I left for my gap year to work in the ski fields of Canada. Five years and three countries later, I ended up settling in Melbourne and now I wouldn’t live anywhere else. I love the foodie culture – especially the coffee! Since joining the reservations team in August 2018, I have enjoyed talking to people from all around the world and helping them to discover the fantastic natural attractions of Victoria. When I’m not at work, I can be found either wandering around one of Melbournes second-hand shops or basking in the sunshine somewhere, ideally with a beer in hand.
Michelle – Tour Guide
Hi, I’m Michelle and I’ve been guiding with Go West for just over a year. Previously I was a tour guide in Europe. Upon arriving home, I sought out the best company in the business and now every day is full of amazing sights, million year old structures and rainforests, fun and laughter. Guiding for Go West gives you such an appreciation for the uniqueness of Australia. Meeting new faces on a daily basis is my source of inspiration and it’s nice to see people smiling because they’ve gone on a helicopter ride over the 12 apostles or they’ve seen Little Penguins parade up the sand. When I am not at work I’m either teaching, studying Italian, planning holidays or going to the beach. This world has so much to offer! Come and join us for a day or two, you won’t regret it! Can’t wait to meet you!
Leah – Tour Guide
I grew up in the Macedon Ranges, just outside Melbourne, and have worked in tourism both in Australia & overseas for the last ten years. Eighteen months ago I made a change from working in an office, and joined the Go West team as a tour guide. It has been a fantastic experience – meeting people from all over the world and showing them some amazing locations. In particular, the Great Ocean Road is a special place for me; I used to spend my summer holidays in Torquay when I was younger, and even now on my days off you can find me packing my surfboard and driving down to the coast to catch the waves.
Chris R – Tour Guide
Born: Melbourne, Died: Yet to be determined. I like long walks along the beach, because I can only surf right hand waves and hate paddling back out, heading to the mountains, riding my bikes, skiing in Japan and drinking Single Malt Scotch. I’ve been with Go West for 9 years! Duties including Driver, Tour Guide, and Terrible Joke Teller. The best thing about working for Go West is watching the smile on the people places when they discover the wonderful places we take them. When I’m not at work you find me in bed or out on the trail.
Alan – Tour Guide
Raised in the tropics, I started my working life as a soldier, left the army to work and live in Europe for several years as a Swiss army salesman and alpine hiking guide. Back in Oz continued as a guide in the outback and jungle. I’ve diversified into supermarket manager, remote community worker, maintenance manager, resort management & much more. When I am not working I can be found hiking, kayaking, mountain biking or at the cinema. My hobbies include any outdoor activities, reading, yoga and animal welfare. I have been at Go West since July 2017. My favourite part of the job is interacting with the many awesome people we have on our tours and the diversity of cultures.
Paul – Tour Guide & Operations Supervisor
I was born in New Zealand so that makes me a Kiwi & (naturally) an All Blacks fan. I have been with Go West for almost two & a half years as a tour guide & occasional Operations Supervisor. The thing I enjoy most about tour guiding with Go West is mixing with people from many cultural & ethnic backgrounds & showing them the beautiful scenery & varied wildlife that Victoria has to offer. Meeting people from all over the world is something that ties in with my passion for travel. I have traveled to over 50 countries & love the challenge of understanding & experiencing different cultures. When I’m not behind the wheel of a bus you can often find me exploring the hundreds of kilometres of cycle trails in the Melbourne area.
Phil – Tour Guide
I’ve been a guide with Go West since December 2015! Growing up in Blackburn, I spent most of my time yabbying in the lake and drains near home. My first professional job was a dairy/pig stockfeed rep in Gippsland in the 1990’s, I’ve also been an Outdoor Education Teacher. Since being at Go West I have fun showing the magic of Australian flora & fauna to visitors from across the globe. Aside from that, I’m pretty sporty and love my fruit trees, vegie patch, berries and chooks.
Rachael – Tour Guide
I grew up in Melbourne, but I’ve also lived in Broome, Darwin, Townsville, Nowra & Sydney. I used to be in the Navy and now I am in the army reserves. I’ve been with the Go West team since June 2017. My favourite part of the job is that I get to meet new people every day, and I get paid to talk! If I’m not at work I’m drinking a cup of tea (or wine) catching up on uni assignments and going hiking or cycling or eating. Heading out on tour is my happy place… I have so much passion, soul, and love for guiding.
Leanne – Tour Guide
I grew up on a dairy, beef and pig farm in Gippsland where I loved the outdoors and exploring the local area on my bike. I moved to Melbourne to study information science at university and have lived on the edge of the Yarra Valley for most of my adult life, with access to the best of the city and country life. I’ve been a tour guide with Go West for six months. I love the brief, but special relationship I get to develop with guests as we share some of Victoria’s amazing places with them – I also love providing them with some extraordinary memories, photos and stories to take home. When I’m not tour guiding, I’m often on my bike participating in 100km events for charity.
Mats – Intern
My name Is Mats and I am currently interning at Go West. I grew up in the Netherlands in a Small town called Koningsbosch. I study International Business in the Netherlands at Zuyd University of applied sciences. For my study, I had to go on an internship in a foreign country. I always wanted to travel to Australia and saw this as the prime opportunity to travel to Australia as well as improve my professional competencies. When I am not in the office you can find me playing different sports, at the gym or playing board games with friends.
Jordan – Tour Guide
Born and raised in Brisbane, Australia. My love of travel took me to Canada, where I spent a number of years working in the ski industry and as a white-water raft guide. I recently returned to Australia around Christmas time last year. I absolutely love working in the tourism industry, and Go West has been the perfect fit for me. There’s a great team environment here, which has allowed me to further develop my skills in providing great tours for all of my guests.
Katherine– Tour Guide
Hello! I’m Katherine! I first joined the tourism industry whilst I was studying my Bachelor of Acting in Perth. I’m an actor… so safe to say I needed another job. I joined the Go West team early in 2018 where I’ve happily been a Tour Guide all year! When I’m not driving, you’ll find me on stage, eating out in Melbourne city, or you might spot me selling 7-11 coffee on TV. I also enjoy rock climbing and giving all of my guests the best experiences possible on tour! 😉
Kenshi – Tour Guide
G’day! Kenshi is my name – it’s Japanese. I was born and raised in Fremantle, Western Australia and have two young boys. I enjoy boxing and drinking… usually in that order! I am a proud Go West Tour Guide and driver. My favourite part of any tour is conversing with the guests. When I’m not entertaining tourists I am being a Dad and Husband or I’m on shift as a Firefighter for the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade. I enjoy travelling myself, and I am very excited in helping to make you day on the road with Go West Tours a great one!
Leonie – Tour Guide
I moved from the Netherlands to Melbourne two years ago, after falling in love with both Australia and a man. I feel lucky to have ended up in such a spectacular country! Melbourne is a great city to explore and discover in, and eventually I turned that hobby into my job and started leading walking tours through its laneways. A few months ago I started working with Go West and now I’m thrilled to call the Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island my “office”. My favourite part of guiding is seeing everyone’s reactions when they see something for the first time – whether it’s a koala, a roo or a fantastic view!
Tassie – Tour Guide
My name is Tassie and I am a guide with Go West. I grew up in Adelaide (Radelaide) in South Australia and lived on the Gold Coast and Brisbane before I discovered how amazing Melbourne was. I moved to Melbourne in 2014 and haven’t looked back – there’s so much to do here! I love showing Victoria off to visitors and giving guests tips on where to go. I am lucky to have travelled to many places in Australia – my favourite trip was to Uluru hiking through The Valley of the Winds. When I’m not at work you’ll find me at the gym, out running along the Yarra River, finding somewhere new to eat or camping with my friends in regional Victoria.
Yazmin – Tour Guide
I’m Yazmin! Originally I came from an entertainment background – working in theme parks, resorts and on cruise ships. I grew up in sunny Queensland, but in 2017 I decided to embrace the cold and move to the most vibrant and amazing city of Australia- Melbourne. When you join me on tour you can expect lots of stories, sing alongs, and fun facts about wildlife and the surroundings. I love working for Go West Tours, meeting new people from all over the world, and taking them to some of the most breath-taking parts of Australia.
